1st Annual Western BCA Grand Masters Challenge Huge Success!
By Bret Baker, with contributions from Rebecca Easley and Suzanne Smith
Western BCA introduced a brand new event at their recent 15th Annual Regional 8-Ball Championships. The Grand Masters Challenge made its debut on March 9-11 at the beautiful Chinook Winds Casino Resort. Eight of the Northwest’s top-ranked Master and Grand Master players were invited to take part in this very special event and battle it out on the pool table for $6,300 in prize money. This event was sponsored by Cue Sports International/BCA Pool League, Western BCA Pool Players Association, and Brain Covey and BC Cues, cue makers who donated cues for a fundraising raffle; all of the prize money was raised separately, with no money being taken away from the Regional Tournament. Each player played ten games with each of the other competitors in a round robin format, with the score recorded at the end of the match. The winner would be determined by the total number of games won.
The players:
Glen Atwell
Hometown: Vancouver, WA—Northwest Players and Cascade Pool Leagues
Glenn is the most decorated male player in the history of Western BCA. He has won countless Western BCA titles and is a favorite every time the regional tournament comes around. He gained national attention by being the first player ever to make it to all three finals at the 2009 U.S. Bar Table Championships in Reno, Nevada, winning the 9-ball division and becoming the All-Around Champion. Glenn is the reigning Western BCA 8-Ball Champion and is known by his peers as, "the grinder.” His disciplined style is the key to his many years of success. Glenn is a regional Western BCA Grand Master and a national BCAPL Grand Master.
Rich Geiler
Hometown: Bothel, WA—Western Washington BCA Pool League
Rich has been a leader of the pack in the Pacific Northwest for many years. Although not as active on the tournament scene as of late, he is always a threat to win any event in which he competes. Rich is a true entertainer in our sport and is often a crowd favorite. He was a top player on the Pechauer West Coast Tour and recorded many top finishes. Along with being a top player, Rich has been a poolroom owner and currently is one of the most respected table mechanics in the Northwest! Rich is a regional Western BCA Grand Master and a national BCAPL Master.
Matt Horner
Hometown: Albany, OR—Cherry City League
Matt is one of the Northwest's up-and-coming players. His steady and consistent style makes him a threat everywhere he competes. He announced his arrival in the Western BCA tournaments, coming up through yearly 8 and 9-ball events with good results and finishing 2nd in the 2008 Men’s Masters 9-Ball event. Don't let Matt's easy going, polite manner fool you. He is a monster at the pool table and he commands respect as soon as he walks in the door of pool halls and tournaments.
Dan Louie
Hometown: Mercer Island, WA—Players Club LTD & Northwest Players Leagues
Dan has been a top player in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years and is credited with putting Northwest pool on the national map. Dan is a former 2-time collegiate champion, former world champion, and the reigning NCS National 14.1 champion. He is one of the true gentlemen of the sport, and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would say different. Dan's methodical style and vast knowledge of the game make him a threat to win whenever he approaches a pool competition. Dan is a regional Western BCA Grand Master, and national BCAPL Grand Master.
Todd Marsh
Hometown: Mountlake Terrace, WA—Players Club LTD
Todd has been a prominent Northwest player for some time now. He was a heavy hitter on the Pechauer West Coast Tour, with many top finishes, and recently recorded top 10 finishes in both NCS National 9-Ball and 10-Ball tournaments. Todd has won regional events in Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Washington, and California. His proudest victory was defeating Rafael Martinez at City Lights in Tacoma. He is one of the top 5 One Pocket players on the West coast. Todd won the 10th Annual Western BCA regional 9-Ball Masters event and he is currently a regional Western BCA Grand Master and national BCAPL Master.
Eddie Mataya
Hometown: Tacoma, WA—Northwest Players League
Eddie started playing in 1999, and has come a long way in a very short time. He won the 2007 Shotze's Memorial 9-Ball tournament, and he won Western BCA’s inaugural casino tour event at Little Creek Casino. Eddie is also the reigning 2009 Western BCA Masters 9-Ball champion, and is quickly becoming one of the top players in the Northwest. He is the house pro at Marlarky’s. His silky, smooth stroke and calm demeanor spell trouble for his opponents. Eddie might just have a plan of his own for the record books. Currently, Eddie is ranked as a regional Western BCA Master.
Don Wirtaman
Hometown: Puyallup, WA—Western Washington BCA Pool League
Don has been playing in the Pacific Northwest for over 45 years. He is an accomplished player in all pool disciplines, and consistently finishes near the top of most Western BCA regional events. He placed 2nd at the March 2009 Western BCA 8-Ball Championships. This former road player knows how to take home the money. His "old school" style is amazing to watch and undoubtedly, he will show us a thing or two about moving around the table. Don is a regional Western BCA Master and national BCAPL Master.
Bob Zack
Hometown: Portland, OR—Northwest Players League
Bob has been a principal Northwest player for over 20 years. Bob is from the Portland area, and he was a regular on the Pechauer Northwest tour, winning several stops along the way. Bob is also the 2008 Western BCA 9-Ball Masters champion. Another player who is very accomplished in all pool disciplines, Bob's fast paced and calculating style definitely make him a crowd favorite. Bob is a regional Western BCA Master and a BCAPL Master.
On Tuesday, March 9th at 2:00 in the afternoon, action got underway with young guns Matt Horner and Eddie Mataya doing battle on table #1 and experienced veterans Todd Marsh and Dan Louie showing their skills on table #2. Many onlookers entered a “Pick the Winner” contest, in which for $5 they could pick the order they thought the competitors would finish; this fundraiser helped benefit the prize money for the GMC. Some of those predictions took a severe hit when Marsh and Horner each scored 7-3 wins and let everyone know this was anybody’s event to win. Two rounds were completed on Day 1 of the event with Glenn Atwell and Matt Horner sharing the lead with 13 wins each. Rich Geiler was only one game back with 12 wins and Todd Marsh had a total of 10.
Day 2 brought more great pool being enjoyed not only by those who could attend the event in Lincoln City, but also by those who were unable to make it. The Northwest Women’s Pool Association (NWPA) provided live-streaming on the web, via U-STREAM.COM. Viewers at home were able to watch all the commentated matches and chat with commentators. NWPA Live streaming proved to be a resounding success as NWPA recorded over 4,500 hits, 2,262 unique viewers, with over 1,870 total hours of viewing in the 5 days of live streaming! When the dust had settled on the second day of the GMC, 5 of the 7 rounds were in the books and once again Glenn Atwell lead all competitors with 33 wins, Don Wirtaman and Matt Horner were tied for second with 27 wins and Rich Geiler was still right in the hunt with 26 wins.
On the final day, the players finished out the last two rounds, playing the only players they had not yet faced in the event. Glenn could smell the finish line and was not about to let his lead slip away. He finished like a true champion, with two monstrous 7-3 wins over Rich Geiler and Dan Louie, to take the title of Grand Master Champion and the $2,000 paycheck that accompanied that title, in addition to paid entry to the BCAP: National Championships Grand Master Division. Todd Marsh rode a couple of 6-4 wins over Eddie Mataya and Don Wirtaman to finish in a tie with Wirtaman for second place with 36 total wins. Rich Geiler made a very respectable return to this event with his 35 wins and a 4th place finish. Matt Horner finished in the 5th spot with 33 total wins. Dan Louie and Eddie Mataya finished tied with 32 wins and Bob Zack, who fought through a bad case of stomach flu, hung in to battle and finished with 29 total wins.

Post event interviews with Grand Master Challenge Participants, by Suzanne Smith:
1st, Glenn Atwell thought that the event had a very good format and said that he would like to see a similarly formatted event at the 9-Ball Championships, but instead of 9-ball, play 10-ball. He didn’t think he would participate in the event if 9-ball was played.
T-2nd, Todd Marsh thought that this was a great event, but next time it should be on 4 ½ by 9s. He said he would definitely participate in 8-ball or 9-ball under this format.
T-2nd, Don Wirtaman enjoyed the event and liked that the players got much deserved publicity; however, he did feel that practice tables should be available to the players and that there needed to be more money added. He felt that Grand Master players have too often been punished for their skill levels, not being able to play here or there, so this event provided them with the opportunity to play among the best to demonstrate how they came up through the ranks.
4th, Rich Geiler thought that the event was “picture perfect” and that it was great to see all of the money go back to the players. He loved the tables and the format. He said that players get to certain point in their pool playing ability where there should be some accolade. When I asked him what he would change about the format, he jokingly replied, “They should ‘86’ Glenn,” and then quickly rescinded and said that the only change he would make would be having a referee designated for the Grand Master Challenge.
5th, Matt Horner loved the event, and said “I like that whoever wins the most games wins the tournament. That’s how it should be.”
T-6th, Eddie Mataya said “It is the best tournament I have ever played in.” He loved that there was lots of room and said that he would absolutely participate if asked again. He thought that the Western BCA did a great job and were very accommodating.
T-6th, Dan Louie thought it was a good event and that it was definitely tougher with all of the best players. He enjoyed the format and recommended that elevated seating be made available for spectators.
8th, Bob Zack, even after a bout with the flu, thought that the event was fabulous, and said, “ It really was the best format a pool player could hope for.”
The GMC players were all very excited about this event and look forward to competing in it again. Many other Master players were also excited and are looking to earn their chance to be a part of this event in the future. The Grand Masters Challenge will be a regular feature at the Annual 8-Ball Regional Championships!
